A day out to the gardens of the Hortus?
The Hortus botanicus Haren is open practically year-round, seven days a week.
During regular opening hours, the gardens, Hortus gift store, plant shop and Hortus café are accessible. The catering facilities in the Hortus have different opening hours and the kitchen is open until 2:30 pm. The Chinese Tea House The Moaning of the Dragon is open to visitors on Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. in July and August. The other time of the year, the Tea House is available for private parties during business hours only.

The Hortus botanicus Haren is an inspiring environment where you can enjoy peace and quiet all year round. For just 12 euros per academic year, you can enjoy as many as 20 acres of gardens for a year.

The following admission tickets are not valid for the Hortus:

- Hortus gardens are accessible only upon presentation of a valid admission ticket.
- Do not pick or eat seeds or berries, plants, or parts of them. These can be poisonous.
You are not allowed to bring plants or seeds. - Wedding photography is permitted in the Hortus. The house rules apply unless otherwise stated in the information marrying in the Hortus.
- All forms of photo or film shoots require prior permission from the Hortus and are possible only on weekdays. Photo or film shoots not announced in advance will be refused or charged afterwards. When publishing photos, please mention the name “Hortus botanicus Haren”. Changing clothes and make-up is not allowed in the garden or greenhouse. Spaces for this purpose can be rented at the usual rates. No distinction is made between commercial and non-commercial, business or private shoots. No greenhouses or other areas can be closed to the public during opening hours.
- Rates bridal reportage up to 4 people € 75,-
- Rates for (commercial) photo shoots or films are on request.
- Children are welcome when accompanied by an adult.
- Dogs are not allowed in the Hortus, with the exception of assistance dogs.
- Bicycles are not allowed in the Hortus; racks are available at the entrance to park your bike.
- Flying a drone in or above the Hortus is not permitted.
The Hortus is not liable for any damage you incur while visiting the Hortus. You enter the Hortus at your own risk. - In all other cases, the Hortus Board will decide.

Hortus Botanicus Haren / Kerklaan 34 / 9751 NN HAREN
The Hortus is easily accessible by car, bus or train. By car, from the A28 motorway, follow the signs for “Hortus Haren. The bus “line 51” stops every half hour at the “Bolhuissteeg” stop on Kerklaan. Sufficient parking facilities is available across from the Hortus entrance.
Bus
Line 51 runs every half hour from Groningen NS station in the direction of Haren. You can also take this line from NS station Haren towards Groningen. At the “Hortus” stop, get off in front of the Hortus entrance.
Train
Haren has an railway station. From this station you can walk to Hortus Haren using Google Maps. This is about a 15-minute walk.
Train taxi
From Groningen railway station you can take a train cab to the Hortus, to do so call 0900-6798294.
Parking
Free parking is available behind the gas station, diagonally across from the Hortus entrance. This parking space is also suitable for group transportation.

Press release: open day Chinese garden ‘The Dragon dances again’
The Hortus Botanicus Haren has decided to move the open day of the Chinese garden, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024, to Saturday, May 17, 2025.
In 2025, the year of the snake, which stands for renewal, the Hortus will want to show the completely renovated Chinese garden to the general public.
The reason for a new date is that restoration work is still in full swing.
Step by step, the Ming garden, unique in Europe, will become more beautiful and more stunning.
Dragon Wall
The Dragon Wall of celestial dragons in the Ming Empire is unique (in Europe) and a gift from China to the Hortus Botanicus (1995).
The wall screens off the imperial gardens to the south, as this is the domain of the emperor and his family.
Opening sculpture exhibition Hortus Animali
Sunday, May 26, the already 14th Sculpture Expo opened in the Hortus botanicus Haren.
The theme this year is ‘Animals’ and the title of this expo is: ‘Hortus Animali’.
To admire 120 sculptures beautifully scattered in the fascinating and blooming gardens of the Hortus.
Tea making – from the past to the present
In the coming time, we will explain several facets of our Chinese garden in the Hortus.
In doing so, we will also discuss Chinese culture.
We previously told you about the Dragon Wall in this Ming garden.
Today we focus on the traditional process of making tea.
Microscopy Day Saturday, Nov. 4, a success!
On Nov. 4, the Hortus Haren was one of places in the province of Groningen where microscopes were on display. This was as part of 70microscopes.nl, an activity of the University of Groningen.
Plant market: enjoying all that grows and blooms
Last Sunday, April 14, was the Plant Market at the Hortus. It was a pleasantly busy day. Many visitors additionally enjoyed walking through our gardens. There was all sorts of things for sale that grow and flourish and they were eagerly taken advantage of.
Beast spotting at Hortus Haren to highlight importance of nature
On May 22, World Biodiversity Day, we organized several activities in the Hortus. Additional public tours at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and between noon and 2 p.m. a count of insects, butterflies, beetles and other small critters. OogTV made a brief report.
Renovated Chinese Tea House
In the Hortus in Haren, workmen have been busy applying new paint to the woodwork, among other things.
Chinese garden has been (and is being) restored
Among other things, the “Thousand Things Pavilion” is already looking beautiful again. A good time to tell more about this building.

At the Hortus in Haren, gardeners are busy preparing the botanical garden for autumn. Because according to Hortus gardeners, the garden is well worth a visit even in the fall. “The fall blooms add the final color to autumn,” Walter den Hollander said.
