At the Hortus in Haren, gardeners are busy preparing the botanical garden for autumn.

Because according to Hortus gardeners, the garden is well worth a visit even in the fall. “The fall blooms add the final color to autumn,” Walter den Hollander said. “And certainly those grasses, that’s great. You can leave those until frost and especially with the ripe on the spikes it gives a very beautiful picture.”

And with autumn comes mushrooms. “It’s been dry for the past few weeks, so it went slow,” says Richard Dijkstra. “But it has been raining well for the past few days, so I expect it to explode here.”

Signs have been placed by the various mushrooms in the Hortus so visitors can see which ones they are.

Plans for the garden’s surroundings will be announced Friday by the boards of the Green Hortus Preservation Foundation and the Friends of the Hortus Association. “The Hortus, heavily delineated, should remain as it is. And beyond that are other possibilities that the board has announced in the plan,” Den Hollander said.
