Sunday, May 26, the already 14th Sculpture Expo opened in the Hortus botanicus Haren.
The theme this year is ‘Animals’ and the title of this expo is: ‘Hortus Animali’.
After a welcoming speech by Harry Zijderveld (graphic designer of the Hortus and chairman of the sculpture committee) Douwe Wiersma – chairman of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Green Hortus – gave an overview of the origin of the Hortus and the importance of the Hortus anno nowadays.
Guest speaker Rob Møhlmann of Museum Møhlmannn closed the opening with an amusing story about the role of animals in evolution and did so in a humorous way.
Afterwards, there was an opportunity for the artists and guests to admire the more than 120 sculptures that are nicely scattered in the Hortus’ fascinating and blooming gardens. The dynamics of spatial sculptures in natural settings. In consultation with the artists, the more than 115 sculptures were placed in the Hortus’ varied gardens. Thus, they engage in a dialogue with the environment and add a new dimension to that place. For four months, visitors can enjoy an inspiring and poetic encounter with the sculptures that range in material use, texture, form (ranging from figurative to nearly abstract) and in size from small to large.
